Typical prompt = 500 input + 500 output tokens, priced on the API model the plan says it includes (or the provider’s top model when it does not say). If you would send more prompts than this every day, the subscription is the better deal — within its usage limits. Fewer, and paying per API call is cheaper. Subscriptions also include apps, tools and features the raw API does not.

The Claude API is pay-per-token. One typical prompt (500 input + 500 output tokens) costs between $0.0030 and $0.0300 depending on the model, across 7 models available today. Prices were verified against Anthropic's official pricing page in October 2026.

Claude Haiku 4.5 is the cheapest Anthropic model available: $1.00 per million input tokens and $5.00 per million output tokens, about 0.3¢ per typical prompt — $1 buys about 333 prompts.

Claude Pro costs $20 a month — the price of about 1,667 typical prompts on Claude Opus 5.5 through the API, or roughly 56 a day. If you send more than that, the subscription is cheaper (within its usage limits); if you send fewer, paying per API call costs less.
